AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF ZOO VETERINARIANS

WILDLIFE PHARMACEUTICALS VETERINARY STUDENT COMPETITION

THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF ZOO VETERINARIANS INVITES VETERINARY STUDENTS TO ENTER THEIR PRESENTATION IN A TOPIC AREA RELATED TO ZOO AND WILDLIFE MEDICINE TO THE ANNUAL WILDLIFE PHARMACEUTICALS VETERINARY STUDENT COMPETITION. THE INTENT OF THE COMPETITION IS TO FOSTER SCHOLARLY EFFORT IN DEVELOPING CLINICIANS AND RESEARCHERS IN ZOO AND WILDLIFE MEDICINE AND THE RELATED SCIENCES.

Wildlife Pharmaceuticals will present a $600 first place award and a $400 second place award. Award winners will be judged on their abstract and oral presentation at the annual AAZV meeting in the fall of 2010. Presentation subjects can include any of a number of traditional veterinary or related science disciplines that impact the management of non-domestic animals, but they should be accepted in one of the session topics of the 2010 AAZV conference. The participants will be judged on a combination of their oral presentation and the proceedings abstract from the AAZV Conference.

TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THE WILDLIFE PHARMACEUTICALS VETERINARY STUDENT COMPETITION:

1) You must have been enrolled in veterinary school during the study, and the work must be submitted within one year of graduating from veterinary school. The subject must entail original research, retrospective studies or case reports. A literature review alone does not qualify for the competition, even if accepted for the conference.  The work must have been completed while enrolled in veterinary school and prior to graduation, although this does not imply that the study was done at the school (i.e. could have been completed during an external preceptorship, clinical rotation, summer program, independent study, etc), but must have been done prior to graduation from veterinary school.

The study must be submitted within one year of the student’s date of graduation from veterinary school.

2) You must be accepted as a speaker in one of the planned sessions for the 2010 AAZV Annual Conference. Respond to the Call for Papers for the 2010 Conference by contacting the appropriate Session Chair. If you are not accepted into one of the sessions, you will not be eligible for the student competition.

3) Once your paper has been accepted by a Session Chair, follow the instructions for speakers, submitting an abstract for the Conference Proceedings. The submitted abstract must be in the format specified for the AAZV Annual Conference Proceedings. Please refer to the Instructions sent to you by the Session Chair and work with your session chair to finalize the abstract and meet the deadlines for the conference.

4) To enter the competition, you must submit an electronic copy of your finalized proceedings abstract and a cover letter to the AAZV Education Committee Competition Coordinator, Dr. Luis Padilla at PadillaL@si.edu. Submission must be received by June 15, 2010. Submission of abstract to session chair alone DOES NOT automatically enter you into the post-graduate competition, and YOU must contact the competition coordinator directly.  Please note that June 15 is the final day that submissions are accepted (i.e. e-mail must be received no later than June 15, 2010).

Submissions (finalized abstract and cover letter) MUST BE RECEIVED by JUNE 15, 2010 in order to be considered. No exceptions will be made.

The cover letter must state which competition you are planning to enter. Please include your full name, as used in the title of your abstract. State which college or university you are graduating from and graduating class year. Make sure that you include updated contact information, including a phone number and e-mail address. Provide the name of a faculty or zoo staff mentor that was directly involved in the work submitted, and indicate the circumstances and dates during which the work was completed. (This information is used to ensure eligibility into the competition).

An acknowledgement of receipt of abstract and acceptance into the competition will be given prior to the conference (contact the e-mail address below should there be any uncertainty as to entry status). If you have not applied or met the aforementioned deadlines, you will not be allowed to enter the competition at a later date, or at the conference.
